Red Card and Late Goal Doom USMNT in 2-1 Copa America Defeat to Panama

Author: Md Shayon

In a gripping Group C showdown, Panama edged out the United States with a 2-1 victory, complicating the USMNT’s path to the 2024 Copa America knockout stages. This intense match, held at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, showcased moments of brilliance, controversy, and high drama, ultimately leaving the U.S. with a challenging road ahead.

Early Drama and Setbacks

The match’s pivotal moment came early when U.S. winger Tim Weah received a red card in the 18th minute for shoving a Panama player. This forced the U.S. to play with 10 men for the majority of the game. Despite this setback, striker Folarin Balogun scored a stunning goal from the corner of the box, giving the U.S. an early lead. However, Panama quickly responded with an equalizer just four minutes later, setting the stage for a tense battle.

Second Half Showdown

The match remained deadlocked for much of the second half, with both teams fighting fiercely for control. Panama eventually broke through in the 83rd minute with a goal from José Fajardo, which proved to be the game-winner. The U.S. made several attempts to equalize, including a close header from Ricardo Pepi, but ultimately fell short.

Tactical Adjustments and Injuries

Head coach Gregg Berhalter made strategic changes at halftime, shifting the U.S. into a defensive 5-3-1 formation to counter Panama’s pressure. Midfielder Johnny Cardoso and defender Cameron Carter-Vickers were brought on, while goalkeeper Ethan Horvath replaced an injured Matt Turner. Despite these adjustments, Panama’s persistent attacks and possession dominated the second half.

A Tough Road Ahead

With this loss, the U.S. Men’s National Team now faces a crucial match against Group C favorite Uruguay on July 1. A win is likely necessary for the U.S. to advance to the knockout stages. Historically, the U.S. has had mixed results in the Copa America, reaching the semifinals in 1995 and 2016 but exiting early in 1993 and 2007.

The Road to Redemption

The upcoming match against Uruguay will be a true test of the USMNT’s resilience and tactical prowess. Fans can tune in on July 1 at 9 p.m. ET on FS1, Univision, TUDN, and Fútbol de Primera Radio to see if the U.S. can overcome this setback and continue their Copa America journey.
